The map captures Central Europe from the North Sea and the Baltic down to the Gulf of Venice, encompassing the Low Countries, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Bohemia, and parts of Poland and Hungary. Engraved by Abraham van den Broeck, the work is notable not only for its geographical detail but also for its distinctive marking of university towns across the continent.

The Holy Roman Empire in the early 17th century was a complex tapestry of semi-autonomous principalities, duchies, electorates, and free imperial cities. At the time of the map was first published, the region was embroiled in the Thirty Years' War, a devastating conflict that ravaged Central Europe. Maps produced during this volatile period, such as this example by Visscher, were crucial in helping an educated European public visualize the highly fragmented geopolitical landscape of the Empire.

This is a rare 1690 edition of the map (without text on the reverse side) that was only published in a 1690 Abraham Wolfgang composite atlas (published in Amsterdam).
