Spain, Basque Country, Braun & Hogenberg, 1598, La Sierra de Sant Adrian en Biscaia / Nobilis Matrona Biscaina / Nobilis Virgo Biscaina.
Very interesting folio sized late 16th century copper engraving with different views of the Basque country and the Basque people. On the top left a noble woman from Biscaya, in the centre on top a view of the Mountain range of St. Adrian, in the top right a noble man from Biscaya and on the bottom different people from places around Basque country in their traditional clothing.
The Sierra de San Adrián is a mountain range that forms a natural border between the Spanish provinces of Álava and Guipúzcoa.
The engraving was made by Braun & Hogenberg and published in 1598 in Cologne, Germany, in ´Civitates orbis terrarum...´.
Very good condition. Some minor repairs in the outer margins, not impacting the image. Clear print, great hand coloring. Central fold, as published. Reverse side text in Latin.
