Item number: 25 26 K

Optical view enhanced with watercolor, depicting a view of the portal of Amiens Cathedral. Engraving on laid paper enhanced with watercolor. Published by Chez Basset, Paris, circa 1790.

Optical views, also called perspectives, or "mondo nuovo," were engravings very popular between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They were designed to be viewed through a set of several mirrors or with a Zygrascope, an instrument consisting of a mirror and a lens. Optical views can be considered the precursors of three-dimensional images and stereoscopes, which became very popular in the 19th century. Optical views appear to have emerged in the 1740s and were popular parlor entertainments. The technique developed first in Paris, then London, and finally Germany, and aimed to represent—in an idealized manner—the most famous panoramas and landscapes of the East and West.

Good condition. A few light stains and minor restorations along the edges. Otherwise, excellent condition. Original colors.
