17th century copper engraving showing a panoramic view of the city of Cranganore on the Malabar Coast in India, with ramparts and Dutch VOC vessels and sloops.
Cranganore was the first town on the Malabar Coast to be captured from the Portuguese by the Dutch East India Company in january 1662. The company intended to use this town as a base from which to conquer other towns in the area.
Copper engraving made by C. Decker, published in Amsterdam in 1676 by Jacob Meurs in "Oost-Indische Voyagie: Containing important incidents and bloody sea and land battles against the Portuguese and Makassares (...)", Wouter Schouten.
Very good condition. Sharp, dark print. Very beautifully hand-coloured.
