Beautiful 18th-century copper engraving with an extensive index. It depicts the siege and capture of the city by the English in 1706. Published in "Maps and plans from the history of England by Mr. Rapin de Thoyras". By N. Tindal, London, 1745. Engraver: J. Basire.

The siege of Ostend, during the War of the Spanish Succession, began after Marlborough's victory at Ramillies in May 1706. The French, who controlled the port, were determined to hold out as long as possible, despite the superior numbers of the enemy forces and the support of the Royal Navy off the coast under the command of Sir Stafford Fairborne. Fairborne eventually deployed bombardment ships to set fire to the city; Ostend finally surrendered after three weeks.
