Vietnam, Tonkin L. Wuhrer, 1872, Carte du Vicariat Apostolique du Ton-king Méridional dressée par les missionaires.
Image 36,5x28,5cm, page 43x30,5cm
Rare and highly detailed uncommon original lithographic map of the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Tong-King. An apostolic vicariate is a territorial jurisdiction of the Catholic Church, similar to a diocese, but established in regions where the Church is not yet fully developed.
The map shows the Southern Tong-King region, which today corresponds to a part of northern Vietnam.
The term "Tong-King" is an ancient name for Tonkin, a historical region of Vietnam.
The Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Tong-King was established in 1846 and subsequently divided into other ecclesiastical jurisdictions.
The apostolic vicariate is governed by an apostolic vicar, who acts in the name and on behalf of the Pope.
The map notes cities, towns, villages, rivers, reliefs and islands. A topographic legend completes the map.
