Item number: 24 34 AY

Unusual antique copper engraved view (with title in Dutch and English) of the Dutch West Indies fortifications of the slave post of Goeree island, just outside of modern day Dakar in Senegal.

Goeree Island was probably named after the Dutch island of Goeree, in the province Zeeland. Another possiblity it comes from the Dutch ´Goede Reede´, or good place to lay anker .

In the 17th century the Dutch West Indies Company settled a tradepost with 2 fortresses here and it would become a major hub for the cross Atlantic slave trade. The British and French later took control of the island.
