Item number:
25 26 G
18th-century copper engraving illustrating French colonial propaganda in the form of an optical view entitled "View of the River and Island of Cayenne." The new colony was seeking French settlers willing to undertake the perilous journey and lead an even more perilous life in what is now French Guiana. The drawing is the work of an engineer named Betcow and was printed by Maillet in Paris, around 1763. Given this idyllic setting, it is clear that Mr. Betcow, if he even existed, never set foot in Cayenne.
Excellent condition, original colors, wide margins.
