Impressive view of the naval battle of Plymouth during the First Anglo-Dutch War on August 26th of 1652.
General at sea George Ayscue of the Commonwealth of England led a fleet of 40 ships and 5 fire ships against a convoy of the United provinces, accompanied by an escort of 23 ships and 6 burners under the command of Deputy Commander Michiel de Ruyter. The two commanders were friends before the war. The Dutch managed to force the English fleet back into the port and could then sail on towards the Atlantic Ocean.

Engraved by the famous engraver Stoopendaal after a painting by Jan Luiken. Published in "G. Brandt, Het leven en bedryf van den heere Michiel de Ruiter" by Blaeu, Amsterdam, 1685.
